Supposedly religion goes back a very long way with oral tradition. Some ancient stories, such as the Enûma Eliš, seem to bear an uncanny resemblance to Genesis. Then there's the Epic of Gilgamesh and the reference to the great flood, which is basically the Noah's ark story.
Presumably the ark business traces its origins to the end of the last Ice Age c.11,700 years ago. This would then be told over countless generations until we get the flood myths, or so the theory goes.
As the Iliad is told in poetic verse do you think these old stories would also rhyme? It would also be extremely interesting to consider what the main world religions have in common and if they can trace back to a common ancestor. I imagine religion has been with man since he first managed advanced communication.
also seems that courage, tolerance and honesty are universal values. That is to say they are virtues which seem to be found in all religions and exist in all civilisations throughout history.
What do you guys think? Do all religions have common values? Can they trace their way back to an original source?
